VERYWORDS Opens POPLE Station in Siem Reap, Cambodia: “An Ideal Renewable Energy Business Model”

“Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2018 levels by 2030 is an extremely ambitious goal—faster than the pace set by Germany, the U.S., or Japan. Achieving this target requires diverse efforts across multiple sectors. POPLE Station, completed with support from the Korea Energy Agency’s overseas renewable energy expansion program, embodies an ideal business model,” said Lee Sang-hoon, Chairman of the Korea Energy Agency, during the grand opening ceremony.

Chairman Lee further emphasized, “Cambodia is the first country in Southeast Asia to announce a roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. There is great potential for cooperation with Korea—not only in renewable energy deployment but also in GHG reduction and carbon neutrality efforts. We expect POPLE Station to contribute to improving quality of life for Siem Reap citizens, creating jobs related to the carbon market, and developing eco-tourism programs, thereby supporting sustainable development in the region.”

The opening ceremony of POPLE Station in Siem Reap brought together high-level representatives from both Korea and Cambodia, including Lee Chang-yong, Executive Director and Head of ESG at SK Securities; Lee Yong-man, Chairman of the Korea-Cambodia Chamber of Commerce; Shin Jong-soo, Director of KOTRA Phnom Penh; and Bun Prakot, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap Province.

SK Securities’ Executive Director Lee remarked, “SK Securities has long had a deep interest in climate finance, and the MOU signed with VERYWORDS is part of that broader initiative.” In fact, SK Securities had previously signed an MOU in 2020 with the Korea Energy Agency and VERYWORDS to support this effort. Going forward, SK Securities plans to evaluate the project’s profitability and cash flow potential as it considers investment and financing options.
